South Korean-born classical pianist Yeol Eum Son is the new cover star for the 102nd issue of Pianist magazine! To celebrate this latest release, we thought we'd test you, our lovely readers, on just how much you know about Yeol Eum Son with these 5 must-know facts about her.

1. She's based in Germany

Son currently studies at the Hochschule für Musik Theater und Medien Hannover in Germany. She is working at the prestigious University with Israeli classical pianist Arie Vardi alongside her. In addition to this, she is an honorary ambassador of the Seoul Arts Center and her home city of Wonju.            

                                    

2. She performed as a soloist with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra back in 2004

Under the baton of American composer and conductor Lorin Maazel, who has now sadly passed, this was the moment that the Korean pianist first drew international attention to herself. During her performance, she played Beethoven's 2nd Piano Concerto.

3. She was a double second prize winner at the Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition in 2011

Since her 2004 performance with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, Yeol Eum Son steadily built upon her reputation. Becoming a double second prize winner at the Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition seven years later propelled her to even greater heights. She also received the Best Chamber Concerto Performances and the Best Performance of the Commissioned Work composed by Rodion Shchedrin.

4. She has made some distinguished debuts in the 2017-18 season so far

The Germany-based pianist has already performed in Birmingham with the CBSO (Mozart Piano Concerto No 21) and London's Cadogan Hall with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields (Mozart Piano Concerto No 8 & 21).

She has also debuted with NOSPR in Katowice (Gershwin Piano Concert), Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra (Dvorak Piano Concerto) and Slovenian RTV Symphony Orchestra (Mendelsohn Piano Concerto No 1).

 

5. Her new album features the last ever recording of the much-missed conductor Sir Neville Marriner

Sir Neville and our new cover star teamed up to record Mozart's most played works. Mozart's most popular piano concerto, No. 21 in C major, forms the centrepiece of this all-Mozart album.
