Tchaikovsky wrote The Seasons in installments for the Russian music magazine Nouvellist in 1875. The short poem by Nikolay Nekrasov that accompanied the piece reads as follows: ‘In your loneliness do not look at the road, / and do not rush out after the troika. / Suppress at once and forever the fear of longing in your heart.’
