Conceived originally as a divertimento, and probably intended for teaching purposes, this sonata is one of six Haydn appears to have composed late in 1766 while in the employ of Prince Nikolaus Esterházy. It’s worth bearing in mind that the piece was written for harpsichord and not an early fortepiano.
