It was written in 1935, together with lyricist and long-time collaborator Alfredo Le Pera. Gardel and Pera tragically died in a plane crash that same year. The tune, however, continues to live on, appearing in such films as Scent of a Woman, True Lies and Schindler’s List.
This solo piano arrangement, written by Bulgarian pianist Stanislav Stanchev, is pure joy, and you can find a tutorial by Stanchev himself below.
Playing tips: Most important is to get the tango rhythm spot-on. The notes fit well under the fingers, and we have added some fingerings for help. From bar 18, make the most of the bass octaves – the tango has really come alive! Pedalling has not been added to the score. Your ears will always be your best judge, so change the pedal when the harmonies change. Too much pedal and it might sound ‘muddy’.
