Download Summary

Many Scarlatti sonatas have appeared inside Pianist, but we thought this particular one, even if written in the Baroque period, sounded so utterly ‘romantic’ – hence in keeping with our Romantically-inspired issue.

Playing tips: The pulse is slow, but as you can see by the ‘cantabile’ marking, the melody needs to sing. For a ringing sound, ‘tread’ into the keys, feeling the depth of the notes. Even if there are no phrase markings, work out the melodic direction, and, if necessary, mark onto the score. There are few dynamic markings; composers of Scarlatti’s time did not litter the score, but they did expect performers to add ornamentation here and there, which Chenyin Li adheres to on the soundtrack.
