The First World War cast Debussy into a personal and creative despondency from which he emerged in the summer of 1915, invigorated by a request from his publisher Durand to produce a new edition of Chopin. Immersion in Chopin’s world is surely key to the world of the Etudes, and to their renewed commitment to diatonicism after the innovative, octatonic flavour of works such as the second book of Préludes: rather than repeat himself, Debussy once declared, ‘I would rather devote myself to cultivating pineapples.’
