Stephen Hough receives a knighthood in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List

The pianist has been honoured for 'his extraordinary contribution to cultural life'

Much-loved British-born pianist Stephen Hough now goes by Sir Stephen Hough, after he was honoured in the Queen's recent Birthday Honours List.

Sir Stephen was previously made a CBE in 2014 and was the first classical performer to be awarded a MacArthur Fellowship.

Upon hearing the news, the pianist commented, "I am absolutely delighted by this honour, and particularly by its implied acknowledgment that classical music is something of continuing relevance and importance in British cultural life."

Hough, who appeared on the cover of Pianist 88, has won seven Gramophone awards and one Classical BRIT Critics award during his stellar career.
