On 5th October, at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, pianist Martin Roscoe (pictured, left) performed all five Beethoven piano concertos. He started at 5pm with Nos 1 and 2, returned at 7pm for Nos 3 and 4, and made his final performance at 9pm with the No 5, the great ‘Emperor’ Concerto.

He was joined in this ambitious undertaking by an orchestra of RNCM conducted by Daniel Parkinson, with ClassicFM stalwart John Suchet taking on the hosting duties. The audience was thrilled by his performance, as were we at Pianist magazine. What a great experience to be able to hear all of Beethoven's piano concertos in one concert.

It was all being done for a worthy charity: the Musicians Benevolent Fund. ‘It has been my ambition to perform all five Beethoven concertos in one evening for a long time,’ Roscoe said, ‘and it is great to be able to do this in aid of the Musicians Benevolent Fund. The icing on the cake is that this will happen in my old Alma Mater, the RNCM in its 40th anniversary year, with an orchestra comprising many of its students past and present, with the very talented young conductor Daniel Parkinson.’
