|
The 20th Edition of the famed competition which rewarded such piano legends as Radu Lupu and Elisabeth Leonskaja takes place 23 August to 19 September 2026 in Bucharest, Romania.

Among literally hundreds of competitions worldwide, the George Enescu International Competition has one of the oldest and best track records for identifying and rewarding excellence, with previous winners of the piano division including Radu Lupu, Elisabeth Leonskaja and Dmitri Alexeev.

Open to Violin, Cello, Piano and Composition, the 20th Edition of the George Enescu International Competition is looking to continue its knack of spotting the talent of tomorrow. The 20th Edition will also introduce an innovative element to its structure: a Composition Masterclass, alongside the continuation of the Conducting, Instrumental Performance, and Advanced Music Study Masterclasses led by Maestro Cristian Măcelaru, first launched during the 19th edition (2024).

About the Competition

Founded in 1958, the George Enescu International Competition honors the legacy of Romanian composer, violinist, pianist, and conductor George Enescu. Inspired by his lifelong dedication to mentoring young musicians, the Competition has grown into a prestigious international event that attracts the most promising talent worldwide.

Held biennially, alternating with the George Enescu International Festival, first-prize winners are invited to perform as soloists in the subsequent Festival edition alongside internationally acclaimed orchestras and conductors. Over the decades, the Competition has launched the careers of many exceptional musicians: among pianists, for instance, Radu Lupu, Elisabeth Leonskaja and Dmitri Alexeev. More recently, Alexandra Segal (First Prize, 2022) and Daria Parkhomenko (First Prize, 2018) began their international journeys at Enescu. And the First-Prize Winner of the 2024 Competition, Roman Lopatynskyi (pictured centre, below), looks set to have a stellar career.

Artistic direction

Cristian Măcelaru (pictured below), Artistic Director of the George Enescu International Festival and Competition, explains:

"The 2026 Competition and Masterclass is themed ‘In Pursuit of Excellence.’ This is both a challenge and an invitation: to achieve your personal best and to join us in Bucharest to celebrate not only the music we love but also the core concept of striving for excellence. George Enescu taught us that pursuing excellence and seeking truth in the arts go hand in hand with talent and dedication. The Competition provides a platform to showcase your achievements, share your artistry, and celebrate the results of your hard work. Following Enescu’s example, artists can inspire others and realize their full potential as human beings."

International recognition

The Competition has been a member of the World Federation of International Music Competitions (WFIMC) since 2002 and the Alink–Argerich Foundation since 2006, making it the only classical music competition in Romania organised according to these global standards. This recognition ensures fairness, transparency, and credibility, connecting participants to international opportunities.

The George Enescu International Competition is a major public cultural event in Romania, with Rounds 1 and 2 taking place at the National University of Music, Bucharest, and the Semi-finals and Finals at the magnificent Romanian Athenaeum – one of Europe’s most prestigious concert halls (see main image, from the 19th Edition). Audiences can follow the contestants’ artistic growth in real-time, experiencing the journey of young musicians on a stage that has hosted generations of great performers.

And finally... George Enescu's legacy

George Enescu dedicated his life to excellence in every aspect of his art – as a composer, performer, and teacher. He set a standard for artistic integrity, technical mastery, and mentorship that continues to inspire musicians today. Cristian Măcelaru is keen to emphasise this:

"Sharing our best through music unites us and allows us to actualize our potential as human beings. Following in Enescu’s footsteps, we can become better artists and contribute to a better world."

The Competition celebrates this vision, offering a platform where dedication, talent, and passion converge. Participants are invited to pursue excellence, share their artistry, and celebrate their achievements in a meaningful cultural context. The 2026 edition builds on these successes, promising another inspiring chapter in the history of the George Enescu International Competition. Participants will not only compete but also experience a festival of learning, collaboration, and artistic growth in the heart of Bucharest.
