The British pianist celebrates his big day with an all-Schubert recital on 8th July at London's Wigmore Hall

With an extraordinary career spanning over four decades, Martin Roscoe is unarguably one of the UK’s best loved pianists. Renowned for his versatility at the keyboard, Martin is equally at home in concerto, recital and chamber performances. In an ever more distinguished career, his enduring popularity and the respect in which he is universally held are built on a deeply thoughtful musicianship allied to an easy rapport with audiences and fellow musicians alike.

Teaching has always been an important part of Martin’s life and the development of young talent helps him constantly to re-examine and re-evaluate his own playing. He is currently a Professor of Piano at the Guildhall School of Music in London and has been awarded a Fellowship there.

Martin is Artistic Director of the Ribble Valley International Piano Week, Beverley Chamber Music Festival and the Manchester Chamber Concerts Society.

Watch Martin Roscoe and Peter Donohoe talk about their love of the piano (filmed at Ribble Valley):

Martin tells us why he has chosen an all-Schubert programme for his birthday recital:

My love for the music of Schubert has never known any boundaries, but it is interesting that in recent years his piano music has become more and more important to me. One of the most fascinating aspects about being a musician privileged to have the opportunity to perform the greatest works is the way one's ideas and thoughts about these works change and develop as the years go by.

‘I shall be playing a Schubert programme of masterpieces very dear to my heart which I have been playing in public for over forty years. After the delicious aperitif of the Two Scherzi, the sublime G major Sonata has to be one of the most purely beautiful of all Schubert's works and has strong ‘pastoral’ undertones only occasionally troubled by drama or sadness. The B flat Sonata is rightly regarded as the pinnacle of his works for this genre, being all-encompassing in its depth and humanity. Although often cited as a valedictory work, finished as it was only a few weeks before Schubert's death, the optimistic finale leaves us with a more hopeful message.’
