Boris Berezovsky tackles Beethoven’s ‘Hammerklavier’ Sonata – one of the most iconoclastic, dramatic and imposing works in the entire piano repertoire. Full of extremes, it’s not only a huge test of physical stamina but of musicianship.
Lyricism and violence coexist in Prokofiev’s Eighth Sonata too, the last of the so-called ‘War’ trilogy, written during the Second World War. The Eighth is remarkable for giving a human face to the suffering, particularly in its introspective second movement.
Boris Berezovsky offsets these mighty musical edifices with Chopin at his most ethereal. The Three Impromptus live up to their name – spontaneous, delicate and endlessly playful.
