The Romanian-born pianist Radu Lupu is one of a number of well-known musicians to have been named in the recently announced New Year Honours list.

Lupu’s award ‘for services to music’ might seem a little odd to some, considering he is not a UK resident and appears rarely in the UK, boycotting London’s concert halls (terrible for us Londoners…) and shying away from the media. In fact, Lupu has not yet featured on the cover of Pianist magazine – that’s how hard he is to get hold of!

In her recent blog, Pianist contributor Jessica Duchen stated that the CBE honour was not monumental enough for a pianist of Lupu’s stature, suggesting that he should have been knighted instead.
