Hear Italian pianist Luca Buratto play Schumann's mighty Fantasy in C

The winner of the 2015 Honens Piano Competition, young Italian pianist Luca Buratto is to make his Wigmore Hall debut on Sunday 22 January 2017 with a captivating programme of works by Adès, Beethoven, Byrd/Dowland and Schumann.
The Italian musician offers a compelling programme that reflects the full range of his musical passions. Buratto’s Wigmore Hall recital encompasses everything from William Byrd’s keyboard arrangement of John Dowland’s Lachrimae Pavan, ‘Flow my tears’, to Darknesse visible and Traced overhead by Thomas Adès. Beethoven’s Sonata in F minor Op 57 ‘Appassionata’ and Schumann’s Beethoven-inspired Fantasy in C major Op 17.
‘I wanted to tell my story in one programme, to show my interests and my ideal way of building a recital,’ comments Luca Buratto. ‘The works I have chosen to play at Wigmore Hall show my interest in early and contemporary music; the programme also shows that I accept the challenge of performing pieces from the mainstream repertoire.’ He describes Schumann’s Fantasy as ‘the piece of his life’, a work he began studying when he was twelve. ‘I feel incredibly close to this music, to its composer and to his imagination.’
Born in a musical family, Buratto studied piano at the Milan Conservatory as well as in Bozen. Before winning the Honens Piano Competition in 2015, he was awarded third prize at the International Robert Schumann Competition (Zwickau) and the special ‘Acerbi’ prize, awarded to a distinguished Finalist at Milan’s Shura Cherkassky Competition, both in 2012. Upcoming engagements include his Carnegie Hall and Berlin Konzerthaus debuts, and concerts with Toronto Symphony and London Philharmonic.
The Honens Piano Competition takes place every three years and is considered one of the world’s most prestigious events of its kind. Honens prepares its Laureates for the rigours and realities of professional careers in music and creates opportunities for growth and exposure. The annual Honens Festival is one of Canada’s premier piano events.
