Schumann probably had Czerny right in his survey of the best pedagogical composers. ‘Kalkbrenner, Czerny and Herz did not accomplish gigantic things, but valuable ones, on account of their thorough knowledge of the instrument.’ In its original form, this piece was written an octave higher in both hands: it has been adapted to suit the beginner.
